This is THE BEST for extracting cores in all sorts of rope. If you splice double braid or 16 strand ropes BUY THIS and see if you don't agree.
These are stainless steel Swedish fids. They are used primarily for separating the strands of three strand rope in order to make a splice.
Even though it is a pretty basic tool, they are invaluable for doing three strand splices. In our shop we also use them to extract the core of double braid ropes like double braid nylons, polyesters and even arborist climbing ropes like 24 strand and 16 strand. They also work great for opening up hollow braid rope like Tenex to make a brummel splice.
So overall, if you are getting into rope splicing at any level, you got to have one of these.

Small Fid Dimensions:
- 6 3/4" overall length.
- 5/8" wide at the widest point and tapering down to the point.
- Best for rope 1/4 to 3/4 in diameter.
Large Fid Dimensions:
- 11" overall length.
- 1 1/4" wide at the widest point and tapering down to the point.
